Webb Furniture Company History:

Webb Furniture Company: From Family Rivalry to Legacy Fusion 1923 – 2006 (acquired by Bassett in 2009)

In the heart of Virginia’s furniture country, two family dynasties, intertwined by blood and fueled by competition, carved their respective legacies: Webb and Bassett. The story of Webb Furniture, founded in 1923 by Taylor G. Webb, is one of meticulous craftsmanship, timeless design, and ultimately, a chapter closed yet woven into the tapestry of another.

While Taylor G. Webb focused on building his Galax-based empire, his brother, John D. Bassett Jr., was establishing Bassett Furniture in nearby Bassett, Virginia. Though born from the same familial roots, their paths diverged, both driven by an ambition to excel in the furniture industry. Webb Furniture rose to prominence with exquisite bedroom pieces, while Bassett carved its niche with affordable, practical furniture for the masses.

The family rivalry simmered for decades, each company forging its own identity and striving for market dominance. However, beneath the surface of competition, a shared respect for their craft and their Virginia heritage remained. In 2009, this mutual respect culminated in a surprising turn of events: Bassett acquired Webb Furniture.

While Webb’s factory doors closed in Galax, its spirit lived on. Bassett recognized the enduring value of Webb’s legacy, its designs, and its unwavering commitment to quality. Webb’s skilled artisans found new homes within Bassett’s factories, their techniques and knowledge enriching the larger company’s repertoire.

Today, the Webb name doesn’t just grace vintage pieces cherished by collectors; it whispers within the walls of Bassett’s factories. Webb’s designs and techniques, meticulously preserved, contribute to the rich tapestry of Bassett’s furniture, adding a touch of timeless elegance to their modern offerings.

In conclusion, the Webb Furniture story is not just about a company; it’s about family, rivalry, and ultimately, the enduring power of craftsmanship. Through their acquisition by Bassett, Webb’s legacy found a new chapter, ensuring that the meticulous care and timeless designs of Galax live on, enriching the homes of future generations.
